I got to thinking today as to why I'm planning on not doing color guard this year. I've given the excuses that I'll be trying to get a job and whatnot and wouldn't be able to get all the time off from work but in reality there's more to it and it came to me out of nowhere.
Even though I had a bit of fun doing it last year my heart just wasn't in it. The marching band at my school is a competitive band. They only play at homecoming and the senior recognition football games. The rest of the time we're practicing or competing.
Being a band member before I moved I always enjoyed band up until we got a new band director that hated my guts because I was homeschooled. Alot of my 'friends' started many rumors about me that let's just say weren't very appropriate for school. I quit band a couple years later. I missed band horribly but there was no way I could go back to that environment. Not ever.
When I decided to enroll back into public school when we moved we were informed that I wasn't allowed to be a senior like I should have been not even a junior. I had to start over as a brand new 17 year old freshman. I was hugely upset but it got me to thinking, 'Hey! I could do band again after my first year maybe?' Well come my sophmore year[this school year] I decided that the best way to get an idea of how the band directors work without actually being in the band was to be in the color guard.
As the season went on I began to realize that there was no passion for music from her, only a passion for winning. After every single competition there were new changes to the show and sometimes they redid whole entire parts! And we only had two nights to rememorize it as well as any changes from the weeks before that stayed the same before our next competition. There was no love for music and it disgusts me.
Music shouldn't be about winning. Music should be about having fun. Yes you have to be serious with music but it doesn't mean you can't have fun. You can try all you can to have a piece of music perfect. You can try all you want but it'll never be perfect like the person who originally composed and played it first did. Everyone makes mistakes. No band can be perfect. Each little mistake someone does while playing a song is what makes each time it's played unique. Competition gives bands something to do when they don't have games or concerts to play but it doesn't mean that they can't have fun with it.
You may disagree with me but this is what I see music as. Music should not be focused on winning but rather having fun and making the music perfect in your own world.
Photography is my new passion. When I stopped playing music I picked up a camera. Photography will never replace my passion for music but will keep me from going insane for not going into band because the directors care more about being first then the music itself.
So sometime within the next couple weeks I'll take some pictures of my one and only clarinet which will honor my passion for music <3
I'm sorry about the randomness and the ranting of it all but I needed to 'rant' about it somewhere.

Keep in touch.
